Job description
About the Series
On Manhattan’s Upper East Side, a group of nannies become indispensable to the families they work for, forming deep bonds with one another and the children they help raise. Moving between life’s varying whirlwinds—births, deaths, marriages, heartbreaks—the women navigate relationships shaped by genuine love and painful inequality, revealing what happens when people who desperately need one another must contend with the dynamics of class, race, gender, labor, and power.
About the Table Read
We are seeking actors to participate in an informal, independently organized table read of The Untitled Nanny project, an original television pilot currently in the early stages of development.
This reading is an opportunity for the writer to hear the script aloud, explore the characters and relationships, and identify areas for further development. The project is independently developed and is not currently affiliated with a network or production company.
The evening will include dinner, an opportunity to connect with fellow artists, a reading of the pilot, and a brief written feedback form followed by a group discussion. Participants will be invited to share their perspectives and observations to support the writer’s continued development of the script.
This reading will bring together a cast of performers to explore the characters, relationships, and world of the series as part of its creative development. There will also be listeners in the room who will be present to provide feedback.

NANNIES
Nanny #1 (Dee) – mid-60s; elder Nepali woman; extremely wise but often too forgiving; has lung cancer; nannies for six-year-old Jacob whom she has raised since birth; there was an accident with Jacob recently on her watch; she’s getting fired soon and is unaware she’s been training a new nanny (Lucy) to take her place. Widowed in her 50s with no children of her own, nannying is her livelihood and she’s well-known in the community for her kindness and dedication to childrearing. The older she gets, the more worried she is that she’ll no longer be able to work. The UES moms seem to be hiring nannies that are younger and younger, and Dee feels unable to keep up. Her lung cancer diagnosis was given to her two weeks ago with an aggressive treatment plan. She has chosen to keep this a secret from Caitlyn, in fear that she might try to get rid of her and Dee needs this job now more than ever to cover medical expenses. She has also sworn her two closest nanny friends, Renata and Azalea, to secrecy about the diagnosis. Those two are like daughters to her and she’s taught them all the tricks of the trade.
Nanny #2 (Renata) – mid-40s but looks younger; Caribbean Black woman; nannies for Dakota and Henry III; runs a tight ship; behavioral specialist; recently lost a pregnancy; inquisitive and can be very friendly when she wants to know more. Deeply religious and married for almost 20 years to her college sweetheart with a teenaged son, Renata built a family of her own in New Jersey initially working in customer service. She then decided to go back to school to learn behavioral psychology and started picking up nannying gigs to help cover the costs. She soon landed in the home of Monroe, who had just had a baby girl. Now nannying for two children, she’s making more than she ever had in her customer service career and is looking to retire early. These two kids can sometimes be the bane of her existence, but they are nothing compared to their mother. Renata despises Monroe. She thinks Monroe lets her daughter run the house, which is unheard of in a Caribbean household and Renata will not allow it. Recently, Renata has been contemplating her early retirement much more frequently, as Monroe has said she’s trying for her third child. Renata and her husband recently lost a child she was 5 months pregnant with due to complications.
Nanny #3 (Azalea- ALREADY CAST-Open to submissions for future) – 30s; light-skinned Black actress and activist; nannies for Isabella, Alexander, and Louis. Originally from the DMV but relocated to NYC in her early 20s to pursue her acting dreams, there is not a single thing Azalea hears and doesn’t question. She was raised, trained, and educated in the art of skepticism. Her activism work requires both this and constant reflection on the societal effects of discrimination. Her acting is learning and teaching, and she approaches nannying in this way too. She thrives on pushing herself to achieve things many wouldn’t have thought possible—even if it’s just getting three kids under 5 from their school on the East Side to their activity on the West Side in under twenty minutes. This is the sixth family she’s nannied for in her career, so she knows the rules of the game. She likes feeling needed. She believes in God; she believes in therapy; she believes in community. She was raised with many siblings, and as the eldest daughter, sometimes she doesn’t know how to put herself first. She sets boundaries but she doesn’t always keep them because she loves to help. Look is Afro-centric; not always matching; modest; wears her hair in locs that fall down to her shoulders
MOMS
Mom #1 (Caitlyn Nolan) – 30s; white Irish woman; a little off-beat; famous actress; married to another famous actor who’s American; mom to Jacob; never wanted a child but kept hers because of pressure from her husband and his family; is clearly ambivalent about motherhood and the lifestyle of the UES as a whole; heavily influenced by the other socialite mothers. If you saw her on the street, you’d definitely know you’ve seen her before, but you won’t be able to tell from where. She’s been very successful in her career, however, and always manages to have a new project on deck. When she had Jacob, she realized every reason she never wanted a kid was 100% valid. She happened to have a kid who’s non-speaking and autistic. She only likes him when he does something for her. And she feels like he likes his nanny more than his own mother. Still, she wants to appear motherly and nurturing, so she’ll do anything to keep up that façade. Her two UES mom friends, Monroe and Genevieve, both give her advice on how to do this. When Monroe reveals she’s heard that Dee’s health is failing, Caitlyn makes it her life’s work to phase Dee out and replace her. Amid this nanny swap, her marriage is completely falling apart, and she and her husband are still desperately clinging onto whatever love was there when they were childless.
Mom #2 (Monroe Roth) – 30s; white woman socialite; new money, married rich; freelances interior designing; completely out-of-touch but tries her hardest to relate; mom to Dakota and Henry III and takes care of them any time not between the hours of 9am to 5pm; recently discovered Dee (Caitlyn’s nanny) has cancer; biggest gossip and will say the most out-of-pocket things. She knew she was having kids the second she met her husband, but she promised herself she’d never let it get in the way of her career. Monroe is an interior designer that other white people deeply admire, but if you listen closely enough, she’s not actually making too much sense. She knows this though and it’s part of her hustle. She knew marrying rich would get her into these spaces where she could squeeze the juice from a lime and still call it lemonade. Monroe thinks her kids are angels but has absolutely no clue where her daughter gets certain unbecoming (racist) qualities from. Still, she’s trying again for a set of twins through IVF because she wants one girl and one boy. She recently heard through a trusted source that Dee has cancer, which gave her a bit of a thrill because the community had been relatively low in drama the previous week. The very first thing she did was tell Genevieve (her idol), who then set up an intervention for Caitlyn.
Mom #3 (Genevieve Ryerson) – early 40s; white woman near-royalty; old money, her marriage was a merging of two incredibly wealthy families well known on Billionaire’s Row; she’s brilliant and a little evil; extremely overbearing about the childrearing of Isabella, Alexander, and Louis, but is only ever fully responsible for them when they’re sleeping. She’s the queen bee. Well-educated. Well-traveled. Childbearing is her livelihood, and she needs 2 boys and 2 girls before she closes up shop (she only needs one more and plans to do IVF). She wants to close up rather sooner than later, as it’s clear to her that her husband is losing interest. Genevieve has made plans to open up the marriage or divorce him if absolutely necessary, but she’s not set on any plan yet and is weighing her options. If you were to ask her about set plans, you could ask about her kids’ futures, which she has laid out by the week in her planning notebook. But if you ask her what their favorite colors are, she’d have no clue. Genevieve is set on getting Caitlyn the help she needs to legally fire Dee. Genevieve lives for conspiring. She finds meaning in pulling strings.
OTHER NANNIES
Nanny #4 (Lucy Little) – 20s; white American girl; recently hired by Caitlyn to phase Dee out; preschool teacher looking for extra afternoon/weekend work; go-with-the-flow type, super naïve, but a natural with kids; wears Meta glasses all the time; Columbia alumna. Having moved to the city from Oklahoma for a grad school program she won’t be able to pay off until she’s 50 and now coveting the infamously lucrative position of preschool teacher, Lucy will do just about anything to stay afloat, so of course, she said ‘keep going’ when one of her classmates suggested nannying on the UES. Caitlyn hired her a few days ago to take over during the weekends with the potential for a full-time position in as little as two months! All she had to do was sign an NDA stating she’d never repeat Caitlyn’s true explanation for hiring her. Lucy was happy to sign it as long her payments came through on time.
Understudy Nanny (Esmeralda) – 30s; Mexican woman; gets hired by Caitlyn, Monroe, or Genevieve when one of their nannies cannot work; has an agreement with the moms that if she keeps an ear to the ground for them, they’ll pay for her family in Mexico to come to the States; she is who told Monroe about Dee’s cancer diagnosis
KIDS
Kid #1 (Jacob Westin) – 6-year-old blonde white boy with autism; non-speaking, inquisitive, anxiously attached to Dee; interested in fire truck ladders
Kid #2 (Dakota Roth) – 4-year-old blonde white girl; best friends with Isabella; extremely sassy; mildly racist (she gets it from her mother) and a compulsive liar
Kid #3a (Isabella Ryerson) – 4-year-old blonde white girl; best friends with Dakota; brilliant and independent; incredibly racist (she gets it from both parents) but Azalea combats this daily
Kid #3b (Alexander Ryerson) – 2-year-old blonde white boy; middle child of his family and honored as the eldest son
Kid #3c (Louis Ryerson) – 8-month-old red-headed white boy; youngest in his family and often ignored
DADS
Dad #1 (Wren Westin) – white male; early 30s; married to Caitlyn; big-time actor; barely present and embodies that elsewhere-ness even in deep conversations; obsessed with his kid (Jacob) whom he rarely sees
Dad #2 (Henry Roth Jr.) – white male; early 40s; married to Monroe; successful banker; decent father to Dakota and Henry III; nice, personable guy unless you’re any other race than white—then, it’s strictly business
Dad #3 (Aiden Ryerson) – white male; early 40s; married to Genevieve; descends from a line of Nordic royalty; father to Isabella, Alexander, and Louis; extremely present in a weird stalker-like way; has an obvious attraction to Azalea
